At New Town Primary School, Religious Education gives pupils the opportunity to learn about a range of religions and worldviews and to develop respect, curiosity and understanding. Through RE, children explore beliefs, traditions, celebrations, places of worship and the ways in which faith and belief can influence people’s lives. Pupils are also encouraged to reflect on their own ideas and values and to listen respectfully to the views of others. 

The Right of Withdrawal from Religious Education 

Religion and belief continue to play an important role in society, and we believe it is valuable for all pupils to have the opportunity to engage with Religious Education. However, parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of the RE curriculum. 

If a pupil is withdrawn from RE, the school will ensure that they are appropriately supervised, although there is no requirement for the school to provide alternative teaching. Pupils may work in another suitable area of the school during this time. 

Parents and carers should also be aware that pupils may encounter religions, beliefs and wider issues of faith in other curriculum areas, such as History, PSHE or wider discussions about identity, diversity, feelings and community. There is no right of withdrawal from these wider curriculum experiences.
