Science
At New Town, our children are taught key knowledge, vocabulary, scientific skills and uses of science that are outlined in the National Curriculum. The science curriculum is taught by drawing on the Plymouth Science scheme. Linked to our school values, children can challenge and engage themselves in stimulating learning whilst being inspired to do their best.
In Early Years, children will discover science through the Understanding the World area of learning. Children learn and explore through hands on experiences linked to half termly themes.
In Years 1 to Year 6, science is taught via organised half termly or termly units. Children will get lots of opportunities for hands on experience explore different scientific themes. The curriculum is organised into units that support the development of specific areas of scientific knowledge, skills and practical experiments.
Lessons in science are carefully planned to ensure that there is a progression of skills within and across the year groups. Children are also provided with frequent opportunities to revisit prior learning so children learn more and know more with.
Our hope is that our children become confident and inquisitive scientists who are keen to explore the world and have the necessary skills and scientific vocabulary to support them in achieving their full potential.
